With a design inspired by the patterns found in factories, production machines, and mechanical joints, Komov's wedding rings are a testament to the beauty of industrial aesthetics. The goal was to create "indestructible" wedding rings that would not only withstand the test of time but also embody the strength and resilience of the bond they symbolize.
The rings are crafted using a combination of modern technology and traditional techniques. The outer layer of each ring is 3D-printed in titan, a material known for its durability. The inner part, made of silver, features a rounded profile for comfortable wear. The rings can also be personalized with laser engraving, adding a touch of individuality to each piece.
The project, which started in August 2018 in Moscow, was completed in October of the same year. It was later exhibited at the Design gallery of the All-Russian Decorative Art Museum. The design process involved extensive research, including interviews with individuals about their own wedding rings. The findings revealed that many rings deform over time due to the softness of gold or silver, prompting Komov and his team to seek a more durable solution.
One of the major challenges faced during the design process was the inability to weld titan with silver or gold. The team overcame this hurdle by inventing a method of mechanically joining the two parts together, ensuring a secure and lasting connection. The result is a series of durable rings that not only retain their shape and texture over time but also reflect the industrial aesthetic that inspired their creation.
The design has been recognized with a Golden A' Design Award, a prestigious accolade granted to innovative creations that advance art, science, design, and technology. This recognition is a testament to Komov's ingenuity and his ability to redefine traditional concepts through innovative design.
